| Abstract | The south/southwest region of Minas Gerais state responds currently to 46% of the state production and 31% of the Brazilian coffee production. In 2005 the National Institute for Space Research started a project to develop methodologies for coffee crop forecast in large production regions. In this context, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the spatial-temporal dynamic of this crop from 2006 to 2008 in the south/southwest region of Minas Gerais state to establish the shortest period of coffee crop mapping repetition. Images from Landsat-5/TM, geoprocessing techniques and ancillary data, mainly high spatial resolution images from the Google Earth website, were used. Regarding to the total area mapped with coffee the interanual variation was small. The largest variations in size were observed when comparing the thematic map of 2006 with maps of 2007 and 2008 with changes ranging from 5.9 to 6.3% of the whole area. The results lead to the following conclusions: (i) if the objective is monitor coffee crop area expansion the mapping can be done each three years; (ii) if the objective is to monitor plant eradication, pruning and new crops the monitoring must be done annually. |
